About this opportunity

Joburg City Theatres is inviting unemployed young people living within the City of Johannesburg to apply for its Professional Cookery Learnership Programme 2026.

This programme is funded by CATHSSETA and gives successful applicants the opportunity to complete a nationally recognised Certificate in Professional Cookery (NQF Level 4) while gaining practical experience in a professional hospitality environment.

The programme combines classroom learning with practical kitchen experience. Learners spend time developing real culinary skills while working in a professional environment, learning how commercial kitchens operate, how food is prepared safely, and how hospitality businesses maintain quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Attend both classroom training and workplace practical sessions.
  • Develop skills in food preparation techniques and kitchen operations.
  • Adhere to food safety procedures and hygiene standards.
  • Assist with stock control and customer service tasks.
  • Practice effective communication and teamwork in a busy kitchen environment.
  • Maintain quality standards required by the hospitality industry.

Requirements

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Be unemployed.
  • Live within the City of Johannesburg (Proof of residence required).
  • Have completed Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
  • Have English as one of your Grade 12 subjects.
  • Be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Have your own transport.
  • Not be registered for another learnership, internship or funded skills programme.
  • Have no criminal record.
